Throne of Skulls: Horus Heresy Review

The weekend of the 3rd – 4th of October saw mighty Legions of Astartes, hulking robots of the Mechanicus and swathes of Solar Auxillia march upon Warhammer World in the first ever Throne of Skulls event for Forge World’s ‘The Horus Heresy’ system.

From the offset there was something very special about this event; the atmosphere in the hall was electric. Every player was there to do one thing; enjoy great narrative games set in the time of the Heresy. Telling great stories and staying true to the cinematic setting of the period was the order of the day, and the attitude of every player reflected that perfectly.

It was immediately clear to the Events Team that there had been a huge amount of love and attention poured into every army as we saw beautifully rendered miniatures on every table. The pride of each player as they displayed their models for the start of Game 1 was evident and justly deserved. This was pure hobby glory in it’s very best form.

Saturday saw the first painting competition, the Legends for single figures. Take a look at the winning entries below and you’ll see exactly what we mean…

The standard in all these competitions was just exceptional. These were some of the incredible models which were alongside the winners in the cabinets.

The Best Army Competition was, as you might expect, very hotly contested. We genuinely struggled to narrow down the forces we were to nominate, but after much head scratching and debate, we got it down to the wonderful 7 armies you can see below. Horus Heresy Throne of Skulls exclusive Tactical Objective cards

Games were using the Maelstrom of War set of rules from Warhammer 40,000 and players were each given a set of event-exclusive Horus Heresy Tactical Objective cards with which to play. Some objectives, being better suited to certain Legions, gave extra bonuses to players owning those Legions when achieved. If you want great event exclusives like this, make sure you get yourself along to the next Horus Heresy Throne of Skulls!

To closely follow the background of the Horus Heresy, each player was asked to declare their allegiance at the beginning of the weekend; would they follow Horus and declare themselves Traitor or stay loyal to The Emperor.  The two Factions were in direct competition with each other for rule of the Galaxy, and only one could be victorious…

At the end of the event, once the last bolter shell had been fired and the last hero of the Great Crusade had fallen, it was time to recognise the players who  had achieved greatness at the Award Ceremony.

If all this looks like something you’d like to experience, we are happy to announce that…

The next Horus Heresy Throne of Skulls will be on 16th-17th January
